Many of the Sacristan’s duties are related to taking care of the Sacristy (hence the name Sacristan) and the sacred items in the Sacristy. This is the secure area of the church which serves as a holding room for the sacred items used in the Holy Mass. The Sacristan’s main duties are to prepare the sacred vessels for the Priest prior to mass. In addition, they set up the altar with the proper liturgical books and vessels as well as assure everything is cleaned up afterward. Sacred vessels require extra care. The cleaning process is done in the sacrarium with specific guidelines. Training and guidance by the clergy is provided for those chosen to serve in this role.
